This weeks tutorial was based on simulations and modelling. Simulations are an interactive application that allow children to be active learners while using ICT. There are many different places where simulations are available. Some simulations are specifically designed for teachers use and are based on various curriculum areas that are used in the classroom. Usefull simulations that can be used by teachers can be accessed through The Learning Federation website.

During this weeks presentation I have learnt that simulations can be very effective and useful recource to use in the classroom, as they can be very fun and educational for students to use and provide an opportunity to integrate ICT into the classroom.

This weeks presentation was about Hands on Data. Hands on Data refers to spreadsheets and databases. We learnt that spreadsheets are an application that sorts and represents information.

Databases are also a type of hands on data where information can be stored and also retrieved. Databases are most commonly made up of a number of tables. These forms of hands on data are important ways to represent and sort information.

This weeks presentation was based on using the program IMovie. Throughout the class we learnt how to make a movie using photos we had searched on Google. The topic for our movie was ‘how to clean your teeth’, however movies can be based on any topic provided you can find images to use. Throughout the presentation we learnt how to use images from google and insert them in to the movie. This can be done by simply draging them from your desktop. We were also able to add sound to accompany the movie, using the microphones on the mac computers. When finished we adjusted the timing of the image and sounds by placing them on a sort of time line. This presentation was very useful as it provides many new possibilities to incorporate IT into the classroom.

This weeks presentation was based on e-books. E-books are a form of literature that can range form conventional literature to more interactive. E-literature can come in various forms, for example the computer screen, CD, websites, files, CD Rom etc. It is not meant to replace traditional books rather it is meant to add an interactive and teachnological element to literature.Throughout this presenetation we learnt how to use Power Pont to create an interactive e-book. The power point program allows you to use various features, such as sounds, animations, backgrounds and pictures to enhance your e-book and make it interactive for students to use.

The presentation this week was made by the group that i am part of. We were presenting to topic of going on line. Although this topic is quite broad we focused on using search engines and building a web page. The presentation gave a brief introduction to using search engines and them focused on teaching the class how to use the program NVU to build the web page. While constructing this presentation i have learnt a lot about various search engines and how to use then efficiently. I am now familiar with children’s search engines that are more appropriate in the classroom as they filter out unwanted material. Through this presentation i have also learnt how to build a web page using the NVU program. This program is down loadable and surprisingly easy to to use. Many features of this program are similar to features of word which makes it less overwhelming. This program could be used in the classroom as it is straight forward to use and fosters creativity among students.

It today’s tutorial presentation i learnt about how to use various programs to assist in making a digital document. This presentation consisted of finding a simple recipe an picture to match, them saving the recipe to a word document. We had an opportunity to do some formatting after which we learnt how to save our document as a PDF file. I learnt that saving a file as a PDF varies considerable depending on what type of computer you are using. On the Mac there are options that allow you to save your document as a PDF, however on a PC this is not as simple. When using a PC you must download a file that facilitates saving as a PDF.

Throughout this presentation i realised how easy it is to create a fun and simple but educational learning activity that can be used by students in the classroom. In future if the facilities are available i will not hesitate to incorporate computers into my lessons.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to my blog, throughout the next couple of weeks i am going to be talking about and exploring various elements of the university subject ICT. I will be bloging about various things i have learnt throughout the tutorials and lectures. Also i hope to come up with ways i can apply my knowledge in the classroom.
